There is a new technology on the horizon
Usernames and passwords were a great way in the past for a site to protect it’s content by requiring a payment method. You would pay for a subscription and you would receive a username and/or password which allowed you access to the site. This is still true with many news outlets as they require a subscription to access their articles. However, there is a new technology that is coming.
x402
Enter the crypto currency solution. The x402 method. This is not a new protocol so we are calling it the method. x402 relies on the already existing protocol, the 402 method using the HTTP protocol.
402 Payment Required
The HTTP 402 Payment Required client error response status code is a nonstandard response status code reserved for future use.
This status code was created to enable digital cash or (micro) payment systems and would indicate that requested content is not available until the client makes a payment. No standard use convention exists and different systems use it in different contexts.
This status code is reserved but not defined. Actual implementations vary in the format and contents of the response. No browser supports a 402, and an error will be displayed as a generic 4xx status code.
x402
x402 is an open, neutral standard for internet-native payments. It absolves the Internet’s original sin by natively making payments possible between clients and servers, creating win-win economies that empower agentic payments at scale. x402 exists to build a more free and fair internet.
No longer do sites have to set up separate billing and subscription systems to be able to serve content that requires a payment. You simply add currency to your wallet and it will pay for it using middleware that is the same for everyone. This means less possibilities of being tracked and censored. You no longer have to rely on third party middle men to manage your subscriptions. It can be anonymous, it’s open, it’s free.
x402 is built-in to existing HTTP requests, with no additional communication required.
